Also large group hire rates are available.

Wanting to progress in your surfing or looking to buy a surfboard? Our “Hire Demo” scheme allows us to help you get the right board. Prices are the same as our standard hire but we record the amount you spend demoing with us and when it comes to buying this will then come off the price of the board:’Try before you buy’!

At Zuma Jay we pride ourselves on the quality of our surf hire, surfboards and surf equipment. All of our hire is based from our main store in Bude, Cornwall EX23 8BR (click here for map location).

You can pull up opposite the shop and we can help load your boards up so you can surf any of our beaches. You can borrow one of our car soft roof racks for completely free, so you can take our boards to any beach you want (at busy times, please bare with us).

Zuma Jay Premium Hire Range

We only hire premium quality surfing equipment to make sure our customers get the most out of surfing and time here. Here is a more in depth view of what kind of gear we hire out…

Beginner Foamie Surfboards

£15 per ‘Cornish’ 24 hours
£60 per week (7 days)

Our foam surfboards or ‘foamies’, are only the best quality we stock. Ranging from the basic slick bottom beginner boards which are fantastic for teaching newcomers how to surf, to higher spec soft top foamies which are more progressive in the way they surf. Don’t worry, we will make sure you are on the right kind of board so you get the most out of your surfing.

How are you going to get your boards to the beach? Don’t worry, we have you covered. Park opposite the shop and ask to borrow one of our soft roof rack systems that we can fit to most cars which can carry several boards. Borrow it for the juration of your hire, easy!

(Thinking of buying a surfboard? Make sure you try before you buy. For more information on our surfboard demo scheme, scroll further down and see ‘Surfboard Demo Centre’).

Entry Level Hard Surfboards

£15 per ‘Cornish’ 24 hours
£60 per week (7 days)

Our entry level hard boards are the next stage on from our ‘foamies’. These hard moulded boards are what we will put you on to take your surfing on from being a basic beginner. Most of our customers have only hired foamies over several years. Here we find that a foamie is like riding a bike with stabilizers. When you have learnt to surf we want to take these ‘stabilizers’ off by moving you on to a board that is going to help you progress your skills easily.

We will always try to have a Prone board to demo and hire here but due to their rare nature please contact us before hand to make sure it is available.

Surfboard Demo Centre

Our store in Bude, Cornwall also serves as a dedicated Surfboard Demo Centre which allows you to test out boards, and with our expert advice we hope to find the right board that suits you!

We here at Zuma Jay encourage a surfboard ‘try before you buy‘ scheme in order to find the right board that is perfect for you. Rather than assume a board will be correct, we prefer to get it right. Whether you’re a beginner or have been surfing for a long time, we have a large surf hire and demo centre which allows you to try out a wide range of board styles, shapes and sizes to use for as long as you want.

When you demo a board with us, we charge you the same as our above hire prices but anything you spend is recorded and if you eventually, with our advice, buy a board any money spent on demoing comes off the price of the board. Even if it takes several months of demoing. This way there is no pressure to buy or time limit to get it right.

As a beginner surfer we will talk you though the whole process and help you understand what board is right for you and why buying a quality surfboards is important also why they cost what the do.

If you are an intermediate surfer, we find that there is so much surfboard information out there, all of which can be confusing and conflicting. Here we try not to focus on just the technical side of dimensions, and volume too much but let the board do the talking. We find this practical approach can ensure the board you get is what you need.

Been surfing a long time and know what you want? You can still demo with us. As above we don’t want even long-time surfers to spend money on a board that is incorrect. We are open everyday for Hire and Demo so just pop in the shop or get it touch and we can talk you through it and get you surfing

Surf Safety

We work very closely the RNLI in that we are a member of the ‘Surf Hire Safety Scheme’ which ensures that only the best equipment and advice is given to make sure your as safe as possible during your session.

  • Wherever possible, always surf at a lifeguarded beach and follow the advice of the lifeguards.
  • Novices should only ever surf between the black and white flags.
  • Ask a lifeguard for advice on where to surf.
  • Always have a lesson at an approved Surfing GB or ASI school.
  • Always wear your leash.
  • If you get into trouble never abandon your board – it will keep you afloat. Wave your hand and shout for help.
  • Never surf alone.
  • Never surf between the red and yellow flags.
  • Never drop in on another surfer.

Rip Currents (RIPS)

Check out this helpful video that our local Bude RNLI Lifeguards have created showing how our Summerleaze Rip current works:

Rips are strong currents running out to sea that can easily take swimmers from shallow water out beyond their depth. They are especially powerful in larger surf, but are also found around river mouths, estuaries and man-made structures like piers and groynes.

How to spot a rip current:

  • Discoloured, brown water (caused by sand being stirred up from the seabed)
  • Foam on the water’s surface
  • Debris floating out to sea
  • A rippled patch of sea, when the water around is generally calm.

How To Get Out of Trouble

If you are caught in a rip or strong current, obey the three Rs:

  • Relax-Stay calm and float. Do not swim against the current, swim across it.
  • Raise– Raise an arm to signal for help. If possible, shout to shore for help.
  • Rescue– Float and wait for assistance. Do not panic, people drown in rips because they panic. Obey directions from the lifeguard.

If you think you can swim in, swim parallel to the beach until out of the effects of the rip and then make your way to shore.
